Memory Foam vs Hybrid Mattress

What lab scores from 25 of our reviews show

The short answer

  • Pick memory foam for the stillest bed and a lower price. Foam beds beat hybrids on motion isolation (8 vs 7.5 out of 10).
  • Pick a hybrid if you sleep hot, weigh more, or sleep on your back. Hybrids beat foam on cooling (8 vs 7) and edge support (8.25 vs 7).
  • Pressure relief is a tie (8 each), and both types center on the same 6/10 medium-firm feel.

What Is the Difference?

The support core. A memory foam mattress is foam all the way down. A hybrid puts a layer of individually wrapped coils under its foam (or latex) comfort layers.

Memory foam

Heat and motion both stay in the foam. That makes the bed quiet and still, and warmer.

Hybrid

Air moves through the coils, and the coils push back. That makes the bed cooler, bouncier and firmer at the edge.

Body Weight Changes the Answer

Every review rates each sleeping position by weight band. At each review's heaviest tested band, foam beds fall away for back and stomach sleeping.

Position, heaviest bandFoam (6)Hybrid (19)
Side4 of 6 workable16 of 19 workable
Back0 of 6 workable8 of 19 workable
Stomach0 of 6 workable5 of 19 workable

"Workable" = rated Recommended or Possible fit. The heaviest band is Over 230 lb for every foam review; for hybrids it ranges from Over 230 lb to Over 350 lb, depending on the source's test bands. For picks, see the best mattress for heavy sleepers.

Price, Trial and Warranty

Median queen price

Foam $1,029

Hybrid $1,549

Range: foam $359–$1,799; hybrid $699–$3,094. Dated in each review.

Hybrid 11 of 19

Many trials require a 21- to 30-night minimum before a return.

Hybrid 16 of 19

"Lifetime" rarely means what it sounds like. See lifetime warranties explained.

Which Lasts Longer?

Hybrids, by a little. The Sleep Foundation puts hybrids at 6.5 to 7.5 years and all-foam beds at 6 to 7 years.

  • The coils rarely fail first. In both types, the foam comfort layers on top soften and form body impressions. Foam quality matters as much as the coils.
  • Heavier sleepers load the foam harder, which is one more reason the weight-band results above favor hybrids.
  • Warranties cover defects, not normal softening. Most only cover a sag past a set depth. Our 1.5-inch sag threshold explainer shows how to measure one.

Which Type Fits You?

Six questions. Each one maps to a measured difference on this page.

Do you sleep hot?
Do you weigh more than about 230 lb?
Do you mostly sleep on your back or stomach?
Does a partner moving at night wake you up?
Is your queen budget under $1,000?
Do you like to sink in, rather than sleep on top?

Memory Foam vs Hybrid FAQ

Is memory foam or hybrid better?

Neither is better for everyone. In Sleep Foundation Test Lab scores across our reviews, foam beds scored higher on motion isolation (median 8 vs 7.5), while hybrids scored higher on cooling (8 vs 7), edge support and bounce. Pressure relief was the same (8). Pick foam for a quiet, still bed; pick a hybrid if you sleep hot, weigh more, or sleep on your back.

Do hybrid mattresses last longer than memory foam?

A little, on average. The Sleep Foundation puts hybrids at 6.5 to 7.5 years and all-foam beds at 6 to 7. In both types the foam comfort layers usually soften first, so foam quality matters as much as the coils.

Are hybrid mattresses cooler than memory foam?

Yes, in our data. The median Sleep Foundation Test Lab cooling score was 8/10 for the 12 hybrids and 7/10 for the 5 foam beds. Air moves through the coil layer; a solid foam core holds more heat.

Which is better for heavy people, memory foam or hybrid?

Hybrid, especially for back and stomach sleepers. At each review's heaviest tested weight, 0 of 6 foam beds were a workable fit for back sleeping, against 8 of 19 hybrids.

Is memory foam cheaper than hybrid?

Usually. The median queen price was $1,029 for the foam beds we reviewed and $1,549 for the hybrids. Prices are dated in each review and change often.
